Synopsis:

This monograph explores the relationship between apposition and exemplification by bringing different semantic and syntactic criteria to the fore. Starting up with the broader frame of apposition, the book then moves on to a detailed explanation of exemplification as an appositional subtype. Special attention is paid to those forms which are used to introduce examples in English, namely example markers. Relevant to this book is the notion of categorisation, since only if we consider appositional structures as a continuum can we include exemplification within the broader term of apposition. On similar lines, not all example markers have the same degree of membership within this set of forms, which contributes to the idea that fuzziness and prototypicality are key notions to understand the structures under analysis in this book.
