Synopsis:
Escritoras escocesas en la nueva literatura nacional analyzes the work of several authors who have contributed to expanding the cultural boundaries of the nation. They live in Scotland, but also beyond its borders, or have ethnic and cultural origins that place them in an identity interstice. They address sexual or religious difference, such as Jackie Kay and Leila Aboulela, or explicitly explore the role of women in Scotland, like Janice Galloway and Liz Lochhead.
With a steady hand, they rewrite national history, reevaluating, in the case of Ali Smith, the complex relationship between Scotland and England, and questioning, as Maud Sulter and Gerrie Fellows do, the British imperial past. Others, like A.L. Kennedy, Kathleen Jamie and Carol Ann Duffy, reflect in their writing the possible overlap of different national, cultural, gender or class identities, through a philosophical and emotional examination of the human experience that goes beyond geographical limits.
