Synopsis:

This monograph focuses on African American feminist directors and their use of biographical genres as counter-narratives that celebrate the contributions of diverse African American artists, activists, politicians and athletes throughout history. It provides a meticulous overview of their biopics, with special attention to the filmmakers who have shaped them from the early days of cinema to the present. The involvement of African American directors in reclaiming denied film space became evident over the past century, from pioneers like Zora Neale Hurston and Eloyce Patrick Gist to trailblazers like Madeline Anderson, dedicated to documentary filmmaking in the seventies, and Zeinabu i. Davis, recognized for experimental work within the L.A. Rebellion group. The consolidation of the African American feminist biopic took place in the nineties and especially in the transition to the twenty-first century, thanks to the brilliant contributions of Michelle Parkerson, Yvonne Welbon or Julie Dash. The genre continues to evolve today with notable directors such as Shola Lynch, Ava DuVernay, Dee Rees or Kasi Lemmons. This study aims to assess how these filmmakers have transformed the biopic into a tool that dismantles stereotypes perpetuated by patriarchal, racist and classist discourses, contributing to the empowerment of African American women as filmmakers, subjects of representation and audiences.
